What our personal branding experts do

Personal branding at Profile starts with what a leader is genuinely known for inside their industry, and what they want to be known for outside it. Profile drafts articles, papers and research in the leader's own voice for review and sign-off. Multimedia is shot in house through the year. Distribution follows on three fronts at once: editorial placement in the business, finance and trade press the leader's buyers read, the same arguments carried on social under the leader's name, and the whole body of it structured so it is what a search for that name returns.

How they work

A personal brand that is not grounded in something the person can actually do collapses on contact with a real conversation, so the work is closer to reporting than to positioning. The job is to find the thing this individual knows that the people around them do not, and build outward from it, which is why it starts with interviews rather than with a template. The other discipline is restraint. A leader who comments on everything is memorable for nothing, and the reputation worth having is narrow: one subject, held long enough that people start associating the name with it. Profile also treats the asset as the individual's own, since the standing built travels with them between roles and firms.

When to bring them in

The usual trigger is a mismatch: a founder or executive whose standing inside the business is higher than their standing outside it, who is being compared on price like any other supplier, or who watches reporters quote a competitor on their own subject. Fundraising, a new role, and a leadership team that looks thinner in public than it is are the other common ones. Profile asks for at least six months, because a reputation compounds monthly.

On AI slop

As the volume of AI-generated content on websites and social platforms expands, readers have wised up and stopped reading. With LinkedIn and Substack both now offering slop-detection features, it's more important than ever that thought leaders write in their voice, and not a machine's.

Questions about personal branding experts

The questions we get asked most about personal branding, answered plainly.

What does a personal branding expert actually do?
A personal branding expert helps an individual define what they are known for and communicate it consistently across public channels. This covers positioning, messaging, media profile, speaking opportunities, social content and search visibility. The goal is a reputation that opens doors, whether that means clients, investment, board roles or industry influence.
How is personal branding different from personal PR?
Personal PR focuses on securing media coverage and managing how a person is portrayed in the press. Personal branding is broader and covers the whole reputation, including positioning, owned content, social presence and search results, not just earned media. The two work together, with PR often acting as one channel within a wider branding strategy.
Who benefits most from personal branding?
Founders, executives, investors, consultants and subject specialists benefit most, because their reputation directly affects deal flow, hiring, funding and influence. Anyone whose name carries commercial or professional weight gains from being clearly understood and easy to find. It matters most at moments of transition, such as a new role, a fundraise or a market launch.
How long does it take to build a personal brand?
Foundations such as positioning, messaging and profile assets can be established in a few weeks. Building recognition and authority through consistent content, media and speaking usually takes six to twelve months. A strong personal brand is maintained over years, not achieved in a single campaign.
How do you measure the results of personal branding?
Results are measured against defined goals such as inbound enquiries, speaking invitations, media mentions, search visibility and audience growth. Experts track how reputation translates into concrete outcomes like new clients, partnerships or roles. Clear baselines set at the start make progress measurable rather than anecdotal.
